The Kraken is a black spiced rum made in Trinidad and Tobago that is named after a fabled sea monster of enormous dimensions. A Kraken was known to eat whales, ships, and humans. Legend has it that this Kraken attacked and destroyed a ship carrying a significant load of black spiced Caribbean rum. As a testament to the beast’s power and might, barrels of black rum that drifted from the ship was nicknamed ‘The Kraken.’
How To Drink Kraken Rum
The Kraken is everything that’s cool about Rum!
From its name and packaging to its black and opaque hue and high proof unusually high for a spiced rum, the Kraken rum embodies everything great about rum.
The Kraken is a combination of light, molasses-based rum and contains 13 different herbs and spices. The rum has a 40% ABV, and the greater alcohol content means that less water is required to dilute it to bottling proof, allowing more of the rum’s original flavours to remain intact.
Wondering how to drink it?
Kraken rum has developed a cult following over the years. However, you might be excused for not knowing anything about it other than a faint flashback to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. What you should know is that it’s a truly fantastic rum that a lot of people enjoy. It also works far better in cocktails than you can ever imagine.
Here are some incredibly simple ones you can make from the comfort of your own home or, um, comfort (?) of your office desk. As they say, bring the bar to you…
1.) The Basic Rum Punch to get the party started
You will require:
- Orange juice, 50ml
- pineapple juice, 50ml
- Kraken, 50ml
Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice and add the rum, orange, and pineapple juice. Shake well before pouring it into an ice-filled glass and your drink is ready!
2.) A Perfect Storm, for all the Trendsetters!
You will require:
- Kraken 25ml
- Ginger Ale 75ML
- slice of lime
For such a daunting term, this is quite simple. Fill an ice-filled glass halfway with rum, ginger beer, and a slice of lime. Done.
3.) The Classic, Black Mojito
You will require:
- Kraken 50ml
- 2 lime slices
- Mint leaves, fresh
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- Soda water
Squeeze a couple of lime slices into a glass, then add the full slice. Muddle it all together with a few fresh mint leaves. Fill the glass halfway with ice, then add your sugar and stir it in. After that, add your rum, top with soda water, and you’re done.
4.) For the cold winter nights, Rum Hot Toddy
You will require:
- Kraken 25ml
- Orange liqueur 12.5ml
- Lime juice, squeezed
- 200ml warm water (or enough to fill your mug)
- Wedge of lime
Pour the rum into a mug first, then add the orange liqueur (Cointreau) and lime juice. Top with hot water to make a twist on the traditional brandy winter warmer.
5.) The No Fuss Drink Kraken & Coke
You will require:
- Kraken 25ml
- Coke 75ml
- Slice of lime
Put a single shot of Kraken rum in an ice-filled glass and add 75ml of coke for a tastier, well-measured alternative to your standard rum and coke.
